This paper presents an overview on the Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-X nanocrystalline powders obtained by mechanical techniques with emphasis on the Ni_3Fe and Supermalloy powders. Some recent papers report producing the Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-X nanocrystalline powders by mechanical alloying, combined mechanical alloying and annealing and mechano-chemical techniques. X-ray diffraction, SEM, TEM, X-ray microanalysis, Moessbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements were used for the detection and characterisation of the new phases obtained by mechanical alloying route. Magnetic properties (coercivity, permeability, susceptibility, Curie temperature, saturation magnetisation) have been studied as a function of the grain size and experimental conditions.
