The conceptual plan for the Jebel Ali New Container Terminal (JANCT) in Dubai combines many innovations in one advanced container terminal. The plan is ambitious in both the use of leading edge container handling technology as well as the enormous scale of proposed landfills. Jebel Ali is already renowned as the first terminal to use tandem 40-foot cranes. This paper explains how a mega-terminal is developed from the ground-up around these cranes, so that each aspect remains in balance with the remarkably high wharf productivity that is expected. Specific areas of focus are: 1) the ideal crane gage for tandem-40-foot cranes; 2) comparing twin-20-foot shuttle-carriers with trucks and trailers as a highspeed conveyance mode; 3) comparing twin-20-foot yard cranes that keep pace with the wharf, including rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs), rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs), and automatic stacking cranes (ASC); and 4) development of a gate complex capable of massive expansion and high security.
