Built in the 1930’s to handle cargo, Piers 88, 90 & 92 currently serve as the premier New York City Port of Call for roughly 900,000 passengers per year with an increasing demand to extend their cruise season and accommodate larger vessels. The piers also create revenue by hosting shows and events throughout the year, culminating in the US Navy Fleet Week Program. Each pier (38m wide x 335m long (125ft x 1,100ft) is supported by roughly 1,500 untreated Douglas Fir timber piles (See Figure 1), with bents spaced at 3m (10ft) on center and pile lines on 1.5m (5ft) centers. Additionally, concrete pedestals founded on either 6 or 25 piles groups 2 support a 25cm (10in) reinforced concrete deck and superstructure columns of the two-story steel framed terminal building with roof parking deck.
