Experimental papers with varying ASA and ASA size load were prepared and characterized with respect to their surface energy using the Good-Oss method. It was shown that by stepping up size additions, both the polar and van der Waals components of the surface energy are reduced. The wetting and absorption properties of paper sheets with differing size load have been investigated using a number of wetting and absorption tests including dynamic contact angle measurements, and dynamic surface-penetration and edge-penetration measurements. Pure water and aqueous surfactant solutions were used as wetting liquids. It has been shown that AKD sized papers reveal an especially large wetting hysteresis indicative of non-uniform size distribution. The mechanisms of size redistribution and bonding for both sizing systems are discussed.
