HDD UTILITY TUNNELTOPEDDOCKS ISLAND - FORT ANDREWS

Peddocks Island, located between therncoasts of Hull and Quincy,rnMassachusetts, is one of the largestrnand most ecologically diverse islandsrnin Boston Harbor. Located on therneastern side of the island, FortrnAndrews is a magnificent example ofrnEndicott Period military fortifications.rnHowever, since 1947, when it wasrnabandoned by the U.S. Army, the fortrnhas fallen into disrepair. Because ofrnits history, Peddocks Island has beenrncertified as an Historical andrnArcheological Landmark.rnPlans are in place for the rebirth of Fort Andrews into a vibrant family camp and ecoretreatrnthat will be the gemstone of the Boston Harbor Islands. However, before thernredevelopment of the fort complex could begin, reestablishment of utility service tornthe island was necessary. The previously existing 100-year old submarine water andrnelectric services to the fort had been destroyed, and no water or electric service to thernisland existed, except for a small photovoltaic system. An aged sewer system thatrndischarged directly to the ocean was also unusable.rnA feasibility study of alternatives to bring utility service to the island was conducted,rnwith the selected alternative consisting of horizontal directional drillingrnapproximately 2,000 linear feet beneath Hull Gut, a major shipping channel forrnBoston Harbor, from the Hull main land to Peddocks Island. A single 20-inchrndiameter steel casing within the drilled bore hole housed HDPE conduits thatrnprovided power, communications, wastewater and water service to the fort complexrnto fullfill the projected utility needs for the planned island buildout.
