A novel technique has been developed which significantly improves the damage tolerance of epoxy coated components in a variety of corrosive environments. Characterization of these coatings via an array fo AC and DC electrochemical techniques has evealed considerable improvements in the overall corrosioin performance as a result of this technology. The quality of the protective coating is thereby maintained, despite minor damage, which may occur on the job site. Furthermore, this improved corrosion performance enhances cathodic disbondment performance while the impact resistance and flexibility of the fusion-bonded epoxy coating are unaffected.
