We present distinctive signatures in the magneto-optical spectra of singly charged and undoped quantum dots. The energy splittings of the spin states in the Faraday geometry mainly depend on the z component of the electron and hole g-factors and to a lesser extent on the exchange energies. In a tilted magnetic field we observe mixtures of the bright and dark transitions, which provide information on the in-plane g-factors, as well as exchange energies. In contrast to the exciton, the trion singlet state contains no exchange energy.
