Abstract: Optical technology is now established as the basis of afuture integrated broadband communication network(IBCN). The capacity of an optical system can beincreased by the development of transmission andswitching facilities of the coherent multicarrier (CMC)technique. This contribution concentrates on thestructure and technology of a CMC crossconnect, whichmay be realized as an integrated optical polymercircuit. The manufacture of passive polymer waveguidedevices is presented. Further electro-optical polymerdevices and erbium-doped PMMA applications arediscussed. !8
