In order to conduct plume fate and migration calculations for a dissolved-phase gasoline release, methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) is usually chosen as the targeted compound due to its negligible retardation and minimal biodegradation. The fate and transport modeling of MTBE in groundwater has been mandated by regulatory agencies, particularly when sensitive receptors are located in proximity to the source area(s).
