"Electricity grids are designed to operate under specific conditions. For example, the nominal frequency level is designed to be 60 Hz with some allowance for small deviations. However, large deviations in frequency can lead to a failure in the operation of the grid. Large frequency deviations can be caused by a supply-demand imbalance potentially due to an oversupply of renewable energy. DRRI can increase or decrease customer loads based on renewables output, so grid operators will increasingly turn to these solutions to maintain system frequency. Such solutions can supply flexible capacity resources to meet specific renewable balancing needs like ancillary services."
