Wide Area Measurement System and the Applications in Power System Stability Control

After interconnections of regional grids, the extended power system demonstrates different characteristics in stability aspects. Some new problems can not be resolved effectively with the employment of traditional solutions, e.g. how to continuously suppress the inter-area low frequency oscillations. However, alternative approaches can be designed based on synchronized phasor measurement techniques and wide area measurement system (WAMS). In this paper, current WAMS developments and the applications in power system protection and stability control are investigated. Firstly, the fundamentals of phasor measurement unit (PMU) and WAMS are introduced. Then, based on the detailed illustrations of WAMSs in United States and China, the PMU performances and WAMS advanced functions are described, in addition, the scales of different WAMSs are also compared. At last, the WAMS applications for protection and control in real networks are summarized according to two categories, i.e. discontinuous control and continuous feedback control.
