Novel microbially synthesized polyesters termed polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have been found in many bacteria and consist of chiral monomers termed hydroxyalkanoates (HAs). Its most common function in bacteria is to store carbon sources and energy. Other functions, such as calcium ion and DNA channels, are also reported. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is the most common PHA and hydroxybutyrate (HB) is its monomer. Other hydroxyalkanoates could be found as monomers in PHAs in many bacteria, such as hydroxyvalerate, hydroxyoctanoate and hydroxydecanoate.
