Effects of Satellite Attitude on the Rayleigh Scattering Calculation

The calculation of Rayleigh scattering radiance is the first step of the atmospheric correction of ocean color remote sensing, which affects the quality of atmospheric correction significantly. This paper studies how the satellite attitude affects the accuracy of the Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation. Satellite attitude affects the geometry angles of the sun and sensor directly, and then affects the Rayleigh scattering radiance. The results show that roll angle affects Rayleigh scattering calculation most, and the relative error of Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation is up to 10% as the roll angle is 2.5~0. However, the effects of the pitch angle and yaw angle are very small, and the relative error of Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation is less than 1% as the pitch angle or yaw angle is 2.5~0. The results also show that, in order to achieve the 1% accuracy goal of the Rayleigh scattering radiance calculation, the satellite roll angle should be less than 0.3~0 if the satellite attitude isn't corrected in the data pre-processing stage of ocean color remote sensing.
