Diffractive-refractive lens system for age-related macular degeneration

Abstract: Age-related macular degeneration is a disease that affects the retina in eye of the older adult, causing central visual field loss. This can result in reduced visual acuity. A magnified image effectively appears as if the visual field loss is small relative to that image. The magnification is provided by an ocular telephoto system consisting of a diffractive and refractive hybrid spectacle lens and a dual-purpose intraocular lens. Without the spectacle lens, the intraocular lens functions as an implant for the treatment of cataracts. With the spectacle the system assists the patient in visual near tasks, such as reading or writing. The application of diffractive optics on the spectacle permits the correction of optical aberrations while reducing the size and weight of the high-power spectacle lens. !8
