MODELLING AN AUTOMATED MAIL EXCHANGE

This paper considers the development of model to act as a management tool to assess alternative configurations of resources in a mail sorting facility (termed a mail exchange). The model contained two key modules, a simulation model of the flow of mail through a mail exchange to assess performance of a given configuration and an optimisation model to select an optimal configuration of equipment and human resources.
