This paper provides a summary of the 3D-LZ Imaging LADAR (Laser Detection And Ranging) flightrntest conducted from June to September 2009. 3D-LZ is an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)rnprogram to address the threat of Degraded Visual Environments (DVE) caused by helicopterrnbrownout. 3D-LZ integrates two technologies. H.N. Burns Engineering developed the 3D-LZ ImagingrnLADAR under contract to AFRL, and the U.S. Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate (AFDD)rndeveloped the Brown-Out Symbology System (BOSS). These technologies were integrated aboard anrnAFDD EH-60L Black Hawk enabling helicopter pilots to safely land in heavy dust in 23 out of 31rnattempts at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground dust course. The four evaluation pilots were able tornalso demonstrate obstacle identification, and simulate heavy lift load maneuvers in brownout.
