Revision of the American Bureau of Shipping Guidance Notes on the Application of Ergonomics to Marine Systems – a Status Report

The publication of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)rnGuidance Notes on the Application of Ergonomics to MarinernSystems in 1998 was well received by the maritime industry,rnmany organizations having adopted the Guidance Notes as arndesign reference. The acceptance of this document has beenrnbased on the fact that the Guidance Notes provide an industryrnspecific source of ergonomics criteria that can be applied bothrndomestically and internationally. When used in concert withrnhuman factors engineering design processes, the GuidancernNotes and processes together provide the full range of informationrnand data needed to integrate humans and machines.rnSince the time of publication, further review of the documentrnand feedback from a variety of sources has motivated ABS tornrevise and augment the document. This paper presents anrnoverview of the Guidance Notes on the Application of Ergonomicsrnto Marine Systems and the aspects under revision.
