We have evaluated biocides and point of entry (POE) treatment technologies for therncontrol of Legionella in man-made water systems using a four-step evaluation process: 1) Batchrndisinfection experiments, 2) Model water system studies, 3) Field installations, and 4) validation fromrnmulti-center studies. Copper-silver ionization, chlorine dioxide, monochloramine for potable waterrndisinfection, and a non-chemical approach to cooling tower disinfection have been evaluated using thisrnprocess. Copper-silver ionization has been evaluated by ail 4 steps of the process. Use of this step-wisernapproach will maximize the possibility that a new technology will prove to be efficacious and costeffective.
