Measurement and Characterization of Underwater Noise from Operational Offshore Wind Turbines in Shanghai Donghai Bridge

In this paper, underwater turbine noise emitted by China's first offshore operational wind farm in Shanghai Donghai Bridge is measured and analyzed. The underwater sound from wind turbines is mainly generated by tower vibrations. For this reason, two sensors are used in the measurement: one hydrophone in the water for receiving and registering the underwater sound and one accelerometer placed in the turbine tower for detecting the tower vibrations. Measurements are undertaken for two different types of wind turbines, one Sinovel 3 Megawatt SL3000 turbine and one Shanghai Electric 3.6 Megawatt W3600 turbine. The two types of turbines show a similar operational noise characteristic. The spectral analysis results indicate that the turbines radiate sound mainly at a few dominating tonal low frequencies from 30 Hz up to 500 Hz, and the changing curves of turbine vibration level and underwater turbine noise level as a function of time are highly consistent.
