1 Introduction Models for the numerical simulation of concrete cracking are traditionally based either on the smeared crack approach or the discrete crack approach. In the former, the cracked material is still viewed as a continuum with a continuous displacement field and the crack is taken into account by modifying the strength and stiffness of concrete for the cracked parts of a structure. Typically, the smallest cracked region corresponds to the region associated with a sampling point for numerical integration over the volume of a finite element.
