In the transportation industry, Fire Life Safety (FLS) and tunnel ventilation form an essential partrnof any tunneling design. The reasons that safety and comfort are so important are that an unsafe/uncomfortablernsystem will not be successful commercially or politically. However, because the cost of FLS solutions representsrnonly a small percentage of the total cost, the requirement for early coordination and design is often overlooked.rnThis paper demonstrates the key aspects of a well-coordinated FLS design should be taken into account in orderrnto minimize total project construction, operation and maintenance costs.
