Shear tab connections are a very popular way of supporting ends of beams that are required to carry gravity loads only. These connections are economical to fabricate, and the supported beams can be quickly and easily field erected. For many practical cases, the capacities of shear tab connections can conveniently be estimated with tables published in the appropriate steel manuals. For the cases not covered by the published tables, rational methods must be used to evaluate the connection capacities. This presentation intends to review design procedures for standard shear tabs, and to show how rational analysis methods can be used to design shear tabs that have characteristics not covered by the published capacity tables.
