The City of Burlingame is in construction of the third of four phases of the Sanchez Bypass and NeighborhoodrnSewer Rehabilitation Project. The new pipeline was designed and constructed using guided auger boring (GAB),rnpilot tube method (PTM), horizontal directional drilling (HDD), as well as rehabilitation using pipe bursting, curedin-rnplace pipe lining (CIPP), and sliplining. The project includes over four miles of 6-inch to 18-inch sanitary sewerrnpipe. Open trench construction was used in some areas to construct a new sanitary sewer bypass, remove and replacernlaterals, remove and replace existing cleanouts, and construct new cleanouts and manholes in tight working spaces,rnrestrictive easements, and in residents’ back yards.rnGAB was used for an 18-inch crossing of a Caltrans right-of-way, which required a 24-inch steel casing. PTM wasrnused at three-8 and 10-inch crossings in steel casings in Old Bayshore Highway. Previous construction work in OldrnBayshore revealed old wooden piers, so a series of probes were installed to confirm the location of the boring. HDDrnwas used to install new sanitary sewers in tight alleyways. Pipe bursting upsized most 6-inch diameter pipe to 8-rninch pipe. CIPP was used in 8-inch and 10-inch sewers that had no major offsets, structural defects, or hydraulicrncapacity issues. Sliplining was used to convert an existing storm drain to a sanitary sewer.rnThis paper summarizes project constraints, design challenges, and construction issues associated with completingrnthe trenchless components of the sanitary sewer rehabilitation project.
