The investigation carried out on a novel getter material based on a Zr-Co-Rare Earths (commercial name St787) has confirmed that it can offer a suitable solution for maintaining good vacuum conditions in discharge lamps. The material can become active during the lamp fabrication process or in the first minutes of the lamp operation, and can efficiently and rapidly remove active gases which may be present as a residue of the exhaust process or may be generated by outgassing during lamp life. These features can be exploited both in lamps with evacuated jacket and in lamps with Nitrogen filled jacket.
