This research focuses on the development of an Internet-based electronic trade exchange technology and the generation of neutral trading files in XML format. Traditional Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) transfers EDI messages via value added networks (VANs) or private lines, which require major EDI enabling expenses. When many trading exchange activities and corresponding data must integrate with the corporate ERP system, the related data may need tedious modification and conversion. These tasks often overburden small companies with a limited number of MIS staffs. Even large companies take major efforts and resources in EB enabling. Using the Internet-based trade exchange approach, the EDI implementation cost can be lowered and the implementation time can be shortened. An open database format for EDI-related data integration makes the internal and external data mapping processes feasible and easier. The research aims to develop an electronic trade exchange solution for enterprises that are pursuing B-to-B e-commerce with small to medium enterprises. Through business process reengineering (BPR), trading message inflows are modeled using an integrated information architecture. Thus, SMEs can transfer or receive electronic messages through the Internet-based trade exchange system adapting efficient inflow and outflow processes. Inside an enterprise, its ERP system can access the trading data via an open database. The system can further export the neutral files in XML/EDI format to external trading partners. With the standard format, the data can be easily integrated with other Electronic Commerce (EC) applications. Finally, a prototype system is implemented to demonstrate the Internet-based trade exchange concept at work.
