Lessons Learned in Developing Human-Computer Interfaces for Infantry Wearable Computer Systems

The U.S. Army's Land Warrior program is adapting commercially available technologies for use by dismounted infantry in a "digital battlefield". The Land Warrior system focuses on providing real-time situational awareness and communication abilities to the soldier. Given the environment and consequences of using this system, the human-computer interface becomes critically important. This paper reviews the evolution of the software interface and the hardware used to operate it.
