Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is now emerging as the technology of choice forfuture communications services. The advantages of this technology lie in its cell-basedstructure, which allows ATM to carry voice, video, and data in the same transport andswitching equipment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the potential networkarchitectures for integrating ATM and SONET rings into the public transport network.These methods include traditional Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM) based ringarchitectures, new ring architectures that provide survivability at the cell level, and ringarchitectures that provide a combination of STM and ATM survivability -techniques. As inthe SONET world, there will be no single ATM architecture that is ideal for every situation.The traffic characteristics, cost, and operational complexity of specific sub-networks willbe key to determining the appropriate network.
