The shear strength and shear modulus of woven S2-Glass with reinforced fibers in the z-direction was determined with a modified ASTM D7078 v-notched rail shear fixture. A series of hydraulic-powered cylinders were integrated into the rail shear fixture and provided a clamping force up to about 53.4 kN (12,000 lbf) per side. The modification was essential to prevent the specimen from slipping in the grips during testing due to thicker laminates than specified in the standard yet maintaining the same geometry profile. The shear experiments were conducted on 3D orthogonal woven S2-glass/SC-15 epoxy with fiber volume 3% and 10% in the z-direction. In addition, results from digital image correlation techniques to measure the full-field shear strains at the V-notch region are presented.
