The ability of electrochemically modulated liquid chromatography (EMLC) to manipulate the retention of organic cations (i.e., various protonated anilines and pyridines) has been investigated using porous graphitic carbon (PGC) as the stationary phase. In general, the retention of these compounds increases as the applied voltage becomes more negative. This dependence is attributed to the importance of the electrostatic interactions between the charged analytes and the PGC surface. Results are also presented that demonstrate the effect of applied voltage on the separation of a mixture composed of both organic cations as well as organic anions (i.e., aromatic sulfonates).
