Polyaniline films have been prepared electrochemically (PANI-E) and chemically (PANI-C). It is shown that PANI-E can prepared in a well defined pure state and that the cyclic voltammograms for the proton and anion doping are well defined. However, the shape of these cyclic voltammograms depends greatly on the doping acid used. Generally, the proton expulsion and anion uptake are overlapping when a weak acid, such as acetic acid, is used as a dopant. On the other hand, well resolved voltammograms are obtained for strong acids such as HBF_4, HCl, H_2SO_4, etc.. FTIR spectra indicate that significant structural differences exist between PANI-E and PANI-C.
