User-Defined Surface Gestures for Mobile Web Browsers

A hand gesture is a very natural and intuitive input method in human-computer interaction. The mobile phone is a popular product using the gesture input, but only some gestures have been used like a tapping, dragging, flicking and pinching. This study identified the most intuitive gestures for mobile web browsers. Thirty-six mobile phone users who didn't have an experience of gesture systems participated in the experiment. Eighteen web browsing commands were explained to the participants and the most appropriate gestures were surveyed from them. They were asked to show proper hand motions and explain why the motions were good. All the experimental processes were recorded by a video camera to analyze the user-defined gestures. Identical gestures were classified into the same group, and degree to which subjects agreed on each particular gesture (agreement level) was calculated. Only 5 among 16 commands showed more than 20% agreement level. Although most gestures had low consensus among the participants, we could figure out the intuitive gestures on several web browsing commands.
