Polypyrrole(PPy) nanofibers were prepared by template-free method electrochemically on Ni, Cu, Pt and graphite electrodes in a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution and then conditioned in 0.10M perchlorate acid for 24 h. The electrode surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The electrocatalytic activity of PPy nanofibers modified Ni, Cu, Pt and graphite electrodes was characterized by nitrite concentrations produced by nitrate reduction. The experimental results indicate that the nitrite concentrations produced at PPy modified electrodes are lower than that of bare Cu and graphite electrode. The PPy nanofibers modified different electrodes have different reduction effect and the PPy modified graphite electrode has promising use in the remove of nitrate from water.
