Surface Characteristics and Dyeing Properties of Polyamide Microfibers by Plasma Treatment

Polyamide microfibers are treated with low temperature plasma and then dyed with commercially acid dye. SEM photographs show the treated surfaces produce some voids and cracks, which lead to the increase in the specific surface area. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates the degree of crystallization of the samples decreases after plasma treatment. Dyeing results reveal that plasma treatment improve the initial rate of dyeing, time of half dyeing and equilibrium exhaustion. The treated samples exhibit lower spectral reflectance. The improvement in coloration is believed to be related with the voids and cracks developed on sample surfaces. Lower crystallinity of the treated samples may also be the reason for the improved dyeability.
