In order to describe the cross-section shape of profiled polyacrylonitrile fibre (PAN) in different aspects, four shape factors, i.e. Flatness (FL), Roundness (R), Concavity (CO) and Asymmetry (AS) were proposed and calculated using cross-section geometrical parameters determined by microscopy and image analysis. The criterions to recognise the cross-section shape were given and employed to class profiled fibres and to measure the proportion of one class to total fibres.
