A perception system is set up to perceive patterns. Symmetries of a pattern are defiend as transformations, under which the perceptions of the pattern remain invariant. It is assumed that there exists a functional, which has the same symetries as those of the patterns. The system uses functions, which minimze the functional, to represent patterns and calculates quantities corresponding to symmetries. I have selected a functional, which has translation symmetries in space-time and dilatation symmetry in the function space, to set up a model perception system to explain monocular monochromatic perceptions of static visual patterns in the brain. The model predicts that the brain uses spatial filters to calculate perception quantities. The model can also explain Weber's law.
