Engineers involved in quality control of new concrete pavements must determine the thickness of new pavemens to ascertain whether the actual thickness meets the specification before payment to the contractor is made. If the actual thickness is less than that specified, payment is reduced. Currently pavement thickness is determined by taking cores. This method is time consuming and expensive, and it leaves holes in the new pavement, which not only need to be repaired, but remain problem spots during the life of the pavement.
