Hydrogen is an energy carrier with two main benefits: it is practically emission free and has arnlarge storage potential. However, the time required to transition to a full hydrogen economy is severalrndecades away. The present infrastructure may have an ability to transport and supply a mixture ofrnnatural gas and hydrogen. Gastec performed a study to evaluate the feasibility of transportingrnhydrogen mixed with natural gas in the distribution gas grid in the Netherlands. For the 8 barrndistribution grid in the Netherlands, an addition of 17 % hydrogen is estimated to have a minimal effectrnon the capacity of the grid. For modern domestic gas appliances, no serious risks were observed. Thernpotential failure of flame detection safeguards is a serious, but not prohibitive, problem.
