KEEPING THE POWER ON: MGP REMEDIATION AT ANACTIVE ELECTRICAL SWTICHING FACILITY

An electrical switching building that handles power for over 100,000 people in NewrnHampshire and abuts a shopping mall, residences, and a creek, lies atop a former manufacturedrngas plant (MGP). The MGP contains underground structures filled with tar and over 20,000 tonsrnof tar-impacted soil and sediment as well as contaminated surface water and groundwater.rnThe goal of site remediation was to perform source removal and the remediation design hadrnto overcome several significant constraints, including 1) excavation next to the vibrationsensitivernelectrical switching building, 2) odor migration to abutting residences and the mall, 3)rnsmall site footprint with no room for stockpiling, and 4) reconstruction of a creek. Remediationrnwas designed to achieve maximum contaminant removal and replace the impacted portion of therncreek while minimizing impacts to residents and the mall and allowing the power supply tornremain active throughout remediation.
