USE OF NATURAL SYSTEMS FOR COST-EFFICIENTWATER TREATMENT

With the ability to detect lower and lower chemical concentrations driving more stringentrnregulations, the associated cost of water treatment is becoming more and more costly.rnAdditionally, water scarcity is also increasing resulting in the need to develop options to treatrnwater to the level that it can be recycled and reused in a cost-efficient manner. For these reasons,rnAlcoa Inc. has been engaged in a sustainable technology water program focusing on the lowerrncost use of natural systems to both reduce storm water generation and to treat contaminatedrnwaters to levels near and below detection. Here, natural treatment systems refer to the use ofrnengineered wetlands, phyto-plots and natural media filtration.rnIn this regard, an overview of this program will be presented along with data from fieldrndeployments. Specifically, natural systems treatment of waters containing PCBs, PAHs, cyaniderncomplexes, fluoride and metals will be presented, along with information regarding theirrndestruction and/or fate in the environment.
