The present understanding of the physics and transport properties of correlated electrons in quantum wires is explained for two representative examples. Non-Fermi liquid collective excitations are obtained within the Luttinger liquid model. Charge and spin density modes are considered and compared with the data from resonant Raman scattering experiments. The results indicate that interactions dominate the low-frequency collective modes. The interplay in DC-transport between interaction, spin, backscat-tering by impurities and inhomogeneity is discussed and compared with recent experiments.
