In contrast to many ultrafine-grained materials demonstrating very high hardness but poor ductility, nanostructured metals produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) can exhibit exceptionally high strength and ductility. Apparently, the origin of this phenomenon is closely related to microsructural features of SPD-processed materials which in their turn are determined by processing conditions. This paper considers several examples of an advanced combination of high strength and ductility focussing on critical SPD processing and microstructural processing parameters resulting in appearance of unique mechanical properties in these materials.
