THE USE OF EXISTING LEGAL TOOLS TO PROTECT ECOLOGICAL INTEGRITY

This analysis of the ability to integrate the concept of ecological integrity into several existing programs leads to the conclusion that the ability to use existing programs to protect ecological integrity depends on several factors that must be considered for each program. These factors include whether the existing legal mandate requires, allows, or prohibits the consideration of ecological integrity in making decisions under the specific program. Another important consideration for those programs that do not prohibit consideration of ecological integrity in decision making, is whether current administrative and financial resources allow for consideration of protection of ecological integrity.
