We consider that moss bio-monitoring may play an important role in future studies of trace element (heavy metal) deposition in the environment. This requires a generally accepted procedure to be used, including the selection of the sampling sites, and intercalibration between different moss species will be necessary in many cases. Samples can be stored for many years for further studies. The results from experience developed in Norway and elsewhere for a long period of time proved the feasibility, reliability, and utility of the method. Its extension almost all over Europe has facilitated the establishment of a European Network. The transfer of the organising of the European Heavy Metals in Mosses Project from the Nordic Council of Ministers to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe International Co-operative Programme on the Effects of Air Pollution on Natural Vegetation and Crops (ICP Vegetation) offers some promise for extension of the moss bio-monitoring technique also to other continents.
