A strategy for the evaluation of hydrologic conditions in areas of complex environment is founded on the identification of landscape-hydrologic systems. The method is developed from landscape-scale mapping of those factors that drive the water cycle in the natural environment and the modelling of hydrologic conditions from known relationships between the water content of the surface soil layers and at depth. Case study data from the "Slavyanka" experimental area, middle Amur Basin, Siberia, is elaborated.
