This review is divided into three parts. First is a review of damping models and techniques for measuring damping. The models discussed are viscous damping, hysteretic damping, and Coulomb damping; the measurement techniques are logarithmic decrement, bandwidth, resonant peak, and phase slope. Second is a review of vibration control using isolators. The concepts of force and motion transmissibility are defined and depicted for the above three damping models. Lastly the steps leading to a widely used isolator selection guide are outlined and the guide is illustrated for the case of a rotating machine.
