SUSTAINABLE SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING OF THE MINING COMPLEXES

Sustainable societal development should not be looked as an activity outside the scope of the mining projects and it should address the entire cross-section of the society of the mining complexes. The actions in relation to the rehabilitation and resettlement of the PAPs should be the sole responsibility of the mining projects. But in the overall development of the areas the State and Central Government Departments should adequately perform their roles. All mining activities, either opencast or underground, should be planned for post mining land use development. The surface areas should be reclaimed in tune with the requirements of the proposed land use and suitable development and utilization of the resources. The concept of temporary displacement of the PAPs should be implemented wherever feasible. The small scale mining sector needs special attention as the societal development in the areas having small scale mining in the country has not yet been adequately addressed. The measures outlined in the text should be carefully examined and implemented. The impacts of mining can be converted into resources with proper planning of the mining and associated activities. The development of such resources should be in tune with the post mining societal requirements of the society. It is important that the decisions regarding the actions to be implemented for the sustainable social development are taken in consultation with the local people and their views and requirements are given due importance.
