DUMP STABILITY ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT- A NEW TECHNIQUE

This paper presents a new technique for overburden dump stability rating and classification scheme. Developed dump stability rating and class is a useful technique for assessing the magnitude of stability at the onset of any opencast mining project without any detail laboratory or stability analysis. This technique provides a convenient and rational way for comparing and evaluating alternate dump configurations and sites at the planning stage. This rating system also includes a guideline for dump construction and operational requirement for new/developing opencast mining project, and helps in assessing the attention and measures to be taken for abandoned dump on stability aspect. For existing dumps, this system is useful to evaluate the relative stability and requirement of stability analysis, stabilisation measures, and mode of monitoring and precautions.
