Establishment Of The Papua New Guinea Centre For Education And Training In Renewable Energy Technologies For The Pacific Islanders

A project called 'CETRETPI' (Centre for Education and Training in Renewable Energy Technologies for the Pacific Islands) 'to-be-established' in Papua New Guinea, forms part of a much bigger project called 'Pacific Islands Renewable Energy Programme' (PIREP) and the associated network (PIRENet) prepared in line with the developmental objectives of UNESCO's "World Solar Programme (WSP 1996-2005)". The 'Centre' would not only educate and train a large number of personnel for energy resource assessment, technology development and information processing in priority areas on RE technologies, but would also play an important role in promoting and spreading the use of RE systems throughout the Pacific region. The Centre's education and training programme would concentrate into all aspects of (ⅰ) provisions for the communities' energy requirements and of (ⅱ) environmental sustainability. It will provide training in order for existing technologies either to be efficiently maintained or modified to achieve maximum efficiency or for new more efficient technologies to be acquired and introduced which are environmentally-benign, cost-effective and equitable leading to sustainability. Through the establishment of 'CETRETPI' in PNG, it is expected that we would be able to mount a campaign of complete education and awareness about RE technologies not only in Papua New Guinea but also within the entire Asia-Pacific region. The 'Centre' would concentrate its efforts to (ⅰ) generate an action plan for the utilization of RE systems in all sectors, (ⅱ) motivate the policy makers in a way that their strategies serve as a segment of an overall energy policy of the region and (ⅲ) work ultimately towards improving the quality of life of the rural masses by promoting the development of local businesses using RE systems for village uplift programmes.
