The growing demand for consumer and business Internet access, and LAN connectivity and ecommercernfor Enterprises is fueling the demand for bandwidth that is straining networkrnresources. High speed SONET and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology isrnalready being deployed in long haul networks to accommodate broadband traffic. Businessrnaccess and Metropolitan Interoffice (IOF) network traffic is currently handled by SONET ringrntechnology, which is optimized for TDM type traffic, but is quickly exhausting given thernexploding broadband demands.rnBell Canada has demonstrated that Dense WDM (DWDM)-based Optical Add-Drop Multiplexrn(OADM) systems are a cost-effective solution for broadband traffic demand for Metrornapplications. This is due to their inherent protocol and bit-rate independence, flexibility,rnscalability and high capacity. Bell Canada strongly believes that DWDM offers an optimizedrnsolution for unpredictable broadband (BB) traffic demand and provides a total value propositionrnfor Metro networks, beyond fibre relief for long haul applications.rnThis paper describes how Bell Canada has taken the first step towards building a high capacityrnoptical network infrastructure through economic and technical assessment of OADM ringrnsystems for both business access and Metro IOF applications. It addresses the architectures,rntopologies and traffic characteristics of the target applications. In addition, it provides insight onrnthe technical and operational impacts and experience gained to date.
