Bleaching Powder Is a variable mixture of Calcium Hydroxide, Calcium Chloride and Calcium Hypochlorite. When it is mixed with water, Calcium hypochlorite decomposes into Calcium chloride and chlorine. (This chlorine attacks on the structure of set cement paste.) The action exerted by Bleaching powder is therefore similar to that of gaseous chlorine In water. The present paper highlights upon the corrosive action of chlorides on cement mortar cubes, which are cured under potable water and 7mg/lit concentration of Bleaching powder for 28 days. This investigation Is carried out on cement mortar cubes, comprised of 43 Grade O.P.C and Kanhan River sand. The cubes of 50cm~2 surface area with cement mortar mixes of proportions 1:3,1:4, &1:6 with water cement ratio ranging from 0.6 to 0.5 for constant value of 20% flow of workable consistency. To carry out Investigation one set of cube of each mlx proportion was cured In potable water and one set of cube in 7mg/lit of chlorine concentration. The cubes were tasted for 3,7 and 28 days for compresslve strength and density. It was found that the cubes Immersed in 7mg/lit concentration of chlorine had lost their cube strength considerably In respect of 3,7 and 28 days for all mixes as compared to the cubes Immersed In potable water at 28 days. The reduction In strength was 20%, 8% and 55% respectively. However the density of cubes was not affected as such. Hence it could be concluded that chlorine has aggressive reaction with cement even in early ages of curing process. Hence suitable anti-corrosive chemical Is to be used In lining of tank.
